Filing a NOTAM with NavCanada

To release a weather balloon there is a requirement to file a Notice to Airmen with NavCanada. The following is information from NavCanada detailing the regulatory requirements for releasing a High Altitude Balloon. The team will receive as much assistance as is necessary to create and file this notice. To follow is an email from NavCanada explaining the process:

There is a requirement to file a NOTAM (notice to airmen) prior to a balloon launch within the North Bay Control Zone. This is dependent upon whether or not there will be a payload (weather sensors) on the balloon.

Here is a reference from the Canadian NOTAM Manual: 5.5.14 Other Balloon Operations

A NOTAM should be issued, under the appropriate FIR NOTAM file, for other type of balloon launches, with the ascent rate. If available, the maximum diameter, payload weight, color, burst altitude and estimated landing coordinates should be included.

Example 1: 120001 NOTAMN CZUL MONTREAL FIR CZUL RADIOSONDE BALLOON LAUNCH 455835N 731827W (APRX 9 NM SE JOLIETTE AD), ASCENT RATE 1000 FPM YYMMDDHHMM TIL YYMMDDHHMM

Example 2: 120001 NOTAMN CZYZ TORONTO FIR CZYZ OZONE RESEARCH BALLOON LAUNCH 441354N 794700W (APRX 4 NM NE ALLISTON AD), ASCENT RATE 1000 FPM BURST ALT 100000 FT MSL YYMMDDHHMM TIL YYMMDDHHMM

Example 3: 120001 NOTAMN CZUL MONTREAL FIR CZUL BALLOON LAUNCH 455835 731827W (APRX 9 NM SE JOLIETTE AD). MAX DIAMETER 40 FT. PAYLOAD WEIGHT 7 LB. ASCENT RATE 1000 FPM. BURST ALT 30000 FT MSL YYMMDDHHMM TIL YYMMDDHHMM

You will be required to include the following information in the NOTAM:

-Location of launch site. [If you are planning on launching from the football field at the school the coordinates are- 46.3356N 079.4510W (APRX 2 NM S CYYB AD)]

-Ascent rate of the balloon-

-Date and time of launch

- If possible also provide the payload weight if it is significant, maximum diameter and burst altitude. The NOTAM can be filled over phone with the London Flight Information Center at: 1-866-541-4104 between 48 hours and 24 hours prior to launch.

I hope this answers all of your questions. If not, don’t hesitate to contact me.
